FAQ
Can I DIY Small Electrical works at my home?
No. In New South Wales, it is against the law for anybody other than a licensed electrician to carry out home wiring or house rewiring services.
Even if the work has been completed to a high quality, it will not pass accreditation, which is a problem if you’re planning to sell the house in the future. Employing a licensed electrician to complete all of your residential wiring work is a wise investment in terms of both your safety and finances.
How often should I get an electrical safety inspection?
Having an electrical inspection done is highly recommended if:
- You’re purchasing an existing home that has been occupied
- Your home is more than 25 years old
- It has been more than 5 years since an inspection was last performed
- You’re particularly worried about how some of the appliances in your new house have been installed
Why is surge protection important?
One of the most important functions of a surge protector is to safeguard your electrical equipment (such as TVs, laptops, and microwave ovens) from surges, which are defined as increases in voltage that are much greater than the specified amount.
Ordinary domestic and business wiring uses a 240-volt supply as its usual voltage, so if the voltage rises beyond 240 volts, it may damage your appliances. An example of a time when this might happen is during a lightning strike. It’s important to note that the higher the joule rating, the more energy can be absorbed by the surge protector.
What exactly is a safety switch, and do I need one?
Safety switches are devices that quickly shut off the electricity supply if an electrical fault is detected. In as short as 30 milliseconds, they can detect the loss of current from a circuit, minimising the risk of electric shock, electricity-related fires, injury and death.
Since the early 1990s, safety switches have been a legal requirement on all final sub-circuits in new houses, and in most states since 2000, they have also been required on light and energy circuits in new homes. The problem, however, is that many older houses do not have safety switches, and circuits like air conditioning, pool filtration, hot water systems and stoves are not protected. If you’re worried your home doesn’t have any safety switches, speak to our team today.
What is the difference between a licensed electrician and an electrical contractor?
A licensed electrician is a person who has undergone the necessary training and received the appropriate certifications to complete electrical work, such as inspecting electrical systems, fixing electrical faults and connecting sockets. An electrical contractor, on the other hand, is a company that is properly insured and licensed to hire electricians to conduct electrical work on a commercial or residential property.
